Day of the Dead Día de Muertos

It took a 12-hour overnight bus ride from San Cristóbal to the long-awaited city of Oaxaca, just in time for Día de Muertos, the annual Mexican festival of the dead, which falls on November 1 and 2. Day, but a few days in advance is already particularly festive. In the past few days, the streets and alleys of the city have been rampant, and there are celebrations everywhere.

First, I went to the Xochimilco district to the north of the city center. There are colorful murals everywhere, very artistic. Skull murals and skulls can be seen everywhere, and the Catrina Catrina skull character is one of the most important representatives of the Day of the Dead. There is also a children's library hidden in this area. It is said that there are many foreigners living in this area for a long time.

After that, I went to another very distinctive district: Jalatlaco, and Reforma business district.

Early in the morning, I went to a small market nearby, and then I went to the big local market, Mercado 20 de Noviembre, in the city center. It sells all kinds of delicious food. I learned a new word in the past two days: comparsa, which refers to a carnival parade followed by a street band. The wedding party I encountered before was a kind of this, but these days I have seen more non-wedding comparsa. The sound of the band was so loud that it could be heard across the streets, and people would usually hear the sound and leave to join the parade, drinking and dancing, twisting and dancing. The drummer's skills are superb.

Go to the neighborhood to see the Day of the Dead children's performance celebrations. There is a small cemetery next to it, nothing special during the day, because most people go to the cemetery at night. It's a coincidence. When I was strolling in a local market yesterday, I saw a person's back that looked very familiar, like the couple from the Bay Area I met in the first week of the Spanish language school in San Cristóbal. From the front, it was really him. But his wife was not there. He's a lawyer, his wife is a mural artist, and he's been living on an Airbnb for several years in another seaside town in Mexico. I remembered before that they said they would come to Oaxaca in October, but I didn't expect to meet them at a local market. He told me that they would hire a driver to take them to a cemetery outside the city tomorrow night to see how the locals were celebrating the Day of the Dead, and asked me to message her wife to see if she could take me there too. So she went back to contact her wife, and she readily agreed. The next night, they went to one of their favorite bakeries he mentioned and bought them some desserts as a thank you, but they took it away, because they lived behind a very high-end restaurant, with only one house, every day. The food is served by the restaurant. She said they were eating so hard every day that they couldn't eat anything else. They took my heart, but I kept these desserts for myself. I also shied away for a long time, and finally she came up with a good idea and decided to give these to the driver. The driver was very happy to receive this package of gifts, and then drove us to the cemetery.

In the cemetery, I feel like I am in the movie Coco "Dream Travel". About the Day of the Dead: Mexicans believe that the Day of the Dead is the day when the souls of the dead return home, so this time of year, people celebrate the reunion with their dead relatives. People pay homage to the dead, but there is no sorrow, and they even sing and dance all night long, intending to celebrate the festival with their dead relatives. According to folk customs, November 1st is the "Young Spirit" Festival, and the 2nd is the "Spiritual Enlightenment" Festival. People bring flowers, candles, colored paper-cuts, paper sculptures, colored skulls, food, drinks, etc. to the cemetery, and arrange altars for their deceased relatives. They sat around the altar, eating and talking, some making hot chocolate, drinking tequila, and playing music in the cemetery. We arrived early, and when we came out, it was overcrowded. The streets outside the cemetery were full of food and flower sellers, so it was very lively.
