chicago week seven

I wanted to go to the Garfield Park Conservatory last weekend, so I went directly. When I arrived, I realized that I had to make an appointment in advance to enter, so I went back home. I made an appointment in advance this Wednesday. The plants and flowers in the greenhouse are very beautiful. I really like the desert vegetation with many cacti. It reminds me of the large botanical garden in Oaxaca, Mexico, with many large cacti.

After visiting the Botanical Garden, I went to the DuSable Black History Museum in the south. Before entering the museum, I found a nearby Senegalese restaurant to have lunch. I have never eaten Senegalese food, so I was very curious. After entering, I asked the boss if Senegalese food is similar to Nigerian food, because I have eaten Nigerian food before. The boss said that their food was much better than Nigerian food, and he pointed to the customer at the window table and said, "Look at that man, he is Nigerian, but he often comes to us to eat Senegalese food." After speaking, he recommended a few a dish. Then learned that Senegalese cuisine is heavily influenced by North African, French and Portuguese food. We ordered fataya (fried salmon dumplings, similar to samosa in India), yassa chicken (chicken stew marinated with onions, lemon juice and other local ingredients), saka saka (marinated lamb, shrimp and crab meat, and cassava leaves ), thiakry (a dessert made with couscous and yogurt or milk products, similar to rice pudding or arroz con leche in Mexico, bissap (roselle tea) and Senegalese mint tea.

After eating and drinking, go to the DuSable Black History Museum, which has many art exhibitions and history about African Americans, and there is also a virtual reality Martin Luther King's commemorative speech "I have a dream" delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington . I went to the National Museum of Mexican Art in the Pilsen district on Friday, and I really like the sentence "Make tacos, not war." A lot reminded me of what I learned about indigenous people in Chiapas (Zapata National Liberation Army Movement) and Oaxaca in Mexico, where discrimination violence against indigenous people is still widespread.

There are two very close Mexican-American districts, Little Village and Pilsen, in Chicago. Little Village (La Villita) feels very similar to Mexico. There are street stalls selling authentic food and snacks, popsicle ice cream shops, bakeries, street stalls selling second-hand clothes and shoes, and colorful piñatas on the sidewalks. (pinatas - papered containers filled with sweets and hung up to beat) and quinceañera (15-year-old coming-of-age ceremony) dresses. The other Pilsen district has more artistic graffiti murals, but this district feels like a gentrified Mexican area, with a lot of upscale fusion dishes and petty bourgeoisie cafes.

There are many Mexicans living in the Cicero district. I went to a very delicious bakery, which sold all the sweet breads and desserts that can be seen in Mexico. I bought pan chino, beso, and oreja butterfly cakes. Sweet bread is my weakness, it makes me miss Mexico so much.

I also went to a Korean restaurant this week and ate bibimbap, banchan and yukgaejang spicy beef soup. When I arrived, I found out that it was opened by a Chinese. The taste is not bad, but it is definitely not as authentic as the Korean food in the Bay Area. In addition, I also tasted the chicken tenders of Raising Cane's, which is quite popular, and there is nothing special about it. Made my own healthier vegan chickpea pasta soup and vegan mashed potatoes this week.
