Ring of Kerry, Killarney

The days of Irish winter are quite short now, with sunshine hours from 8:00 to 4:00. I arrived in the small town of Killarney last night, and it was also very festive. I signed up for a one-day tour to visit the Ring of Kerry. It was raining when I left in the morning, and the weather gradually turned fine. Passing by many farms along the way, there are flocks of cattle and sheep. The tour guide driver said that the Irish have more sheep than people. Many sheep here are colorful. Generally, there is a patch of red or blue on the back, and some sheep have both colors, and green and purple are also seen later. This is because farmers can identify their sheep by color.

Driving all the way along the Atlantic coast, passing through several very stylish towns, I found that there is at least one Chinese restaurant in each town. The golf course in the small town of Waterville is famous all over the world, and many celebrities have come here to play golf. There is a statue of Charlie Chaplin in the center of the town because he fell in love with it when he first came here in 1959 and came every year for the next ten years. Since 2011, in memory of him, the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival will be held here every August.

The tour guide driver also introduced us to the Great Irish Famine, also known as the Irish Potato Famine. The outbreak of late blight, a natural disaster in the seven years from 1845 to 1852, led to a large reduction in potato production. Potatoes were the main source of food for the Irish at that time. However, due to this single diet structure, about one million people died of starvation after the large reduction in potato production. Another million more people were forced to leave Ireland, reducing the total population of Ireland by 20%-25%. After that, the guide pointed to the small island in the distance and told us that it was one of the filming locations for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". The last stop is the small town of Sneem, where the streets are exceptionally clean and colorful houses can be seen everywhere. I heard that the summer tourist season is overcrowded and there is no place to park, but now it is the off-season, many shops are closed, and it is very deserted.

Today, the road around the Ring of Kerry was rainy and sunny, accompanied by a rainbow and listening to various Irish folk songs played by the driver. It was very pleasant, but I accidentally fell asleep a few times.

After hiking for four or five hours in Killarney National Park, I saw herds of deer and reindeer, as well as several ancient castles. I didn't see a few people for most of the day.
