This is my third trip to Europe, but this is my first time alone. I finally arrived in Spain, where I have been wanting to go since I took Spanish classes in college. Spain has been on the top of my list of travel destinations, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon. If it weren't for the fact that I've been tracking airfare prices to any destination around the world since December to help me decide on my next travel destination, I was super lucky to see unimaginably cheap trips to Barcelona on Christmas Day last year. The $300 round-trip airfare (except me, I guess no one is checking tickets on Christmas Day with the family), and I don't think there will be this trip to Spain. I didn't even think about it at the time, and I didn't wait for the boss to approve the ticket, so I bought the ticket.

Although I got the unbelievably cheap tickets, there was some unexpected hassle with the visa application. A good friend suggested that I book a visa appointment with the Spanish embassy ASAP, but there is a high chance that the they are not available anymore. Before he went to Spain a few years ago, he tried to make an appointment a few months ahead only to find out that none was available till a year later. The reason was that a third-party visa company booked them out and then “sold” the spot for a much higher price. In the end, he had to go to the French embassy to get a Schengen visa, and then to Spain. I was a little skeptical about that and didn’t believe that the embassy would let something like that happen. However, it turned out to be exactly what he said when I checked the appointments availability on the embassy website, and the third-party company charged at least twice the visa fee. I was thinking that I planned to go to Portugal anyway, so I’ll just apply for the Schengen visa from the Portuguese embassy instead. Here are some tips for you: There should not be any problem as long as you can prove in the Schengen visa application that you plan to stay in the visa country longer. The country where you enter first and the country where you got your Schengen visa from do not necessarily be the same country. Also, as long as the visa is granted, you don’t really have to stay longer in the visa country, since nobody knows after all. In my case, the visa country is Portugal, but I will enter from Spain. Even though in the Portuguese Schengen visa application I indicated that I would stay longer in Portugal, in fact I would definitely stay longer in Spain.

After more than 11-hour flight, I’ve finally made it to Barcelona. Barcelona is a city that is very walkable. Since I landed in the morning, I’ve only taken the airport bus to the city. Other than that, I simply walked around and explored the city for the rest of the day. The city is extremely pretty. Plus, there are good-looking Europeans wherever I go. Compared to most Americans who don’t care much about fashion, Europeans apparently are dressed way more fashionably.

Once checked in the hostel, I rushed to visit the three unique and representative architectures designed by the most famous Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona: Casa Batlló, La Pedrera-Casa Milá, and Sagrada Familia (expect to be completed in 2026). Words cannot even describe how I felt when I saw them. All of them seem so unrealistic and dreamy.

One of my favorites every time I travel is the local market. Mercat de la Boqueria didn't let me down either, and I couldn't see all kinds of food. Fortunately, I came on Saturday, otherwise I would have missed it when it was closed on Sunday. I met two foodie friends that day and asked to have dinner together! One is a microbiological engineer who was born in Africa and grew up in Switzerland and came to Barcelona on a business trip. The other is a local foodie born in Colombia who has lived in six countries (Argentina, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, Spain) for a long time and is fluent in five languages. Because the market closed early, he took us two tourists to his favorite restaurant and ordered a bunch of tapa to share. While enjoying the food, he also introduced the Spanish food culture to both of us by the way.
